He is getting big and wide (not a good thing).

My eye isn't getting better. But, I'm dealing with it.
      Thanks for asking.

See you soon. Are you going to China 3DX?

      Benny

Wow, nice to hear from you on rc-heli.de, as well .

Could you tell me how you got Justin involved into rc helicopter flying? How old was he, when he started flying ? And did Justin spend a lot of time in front of the simulator?

My son just turned one year old, yesterday. Sooner or later I also want him to introduce to this nice hobby. But I don't want him to spend too much time in front of the computer screen.

I also saw the amazing Video of the 6 1/2 year old korean kid, that you published on RR

Man - unbelievable what those kids already can do in this young age.

I fly Mode 1 (throttle on the right side) and I am wondering, if it might be better to teach my son in the future Mode 2 (since I believe that pirouetting maneuvers might be easier to handle in Mode 2). What do you think? By the way 'Min-Chan Kim' flies Mode 1 doen't he.?

Hope to hear from you soon

        Cheers Marc

Yes Min-Chan flies mode 1. You can read about Justin's development in the link below.

As far as learning mode 1 or mode 2, it should not matter to the child. At that age, you can't teach him, you just can observe and hope he learns on his own.

I believe the most important trait is to have a hate for crash. I'm not sure if that is something that can be taught to a year old.

          Good luck

Thank you for your quick reply and the attached "link"

I started reading your very interesting story about your son. (I couldn't finish it, yet, because it's getting late).

I really like the fact, that you were not pushing Justin into this hobby and that it was his own free will to achieve such a high 3D level.

Tomorrow I'll continue reading "the story of Justin Chi"

            Thank you very much

I got back in to RC airplane flying in 2003 when Justin was about 8months old. I went to the field with my wife and Justin almost every week to learn the new craze about 3D flying. Justin got accustomed to seeing how RC airplanes flew on his own. Without me knowing, he must have been wanting to do the same while I wasn't paying attention while he was playing with the sim box.

While I gave it to him to stop him from nagging every time I wanted to practice, I had no idea it would turn in to this.

When he just started to appear on internet, people were worried about child's attention span. I guess he is wired differently than average child in that respect. He would complain about eye pain after doing sim for 10min or so.This baffled me until I discovered that his focus was so great that his body was stopping the reflex function of blinking. So, I used to tell him to blink. This was when he was 3-4 I think. He doesn't complain about his eye anymore so I assume he is now relaxed enough to blink.

This only happens to me when I enter a maneuver like piro-flip where I just can't afford to blink. So, I force myself to pre-blink to wet my eyes before entering piro-flip.

So, one bit of advise that I can give is for you to take you son to the field as much as you can so he can develop a sense of what to do with a heli or an airplane. But, you will need your wife's cooperation as it is not possible or safe to have a child there without his mother.

My wife already complained about, that I brought my son in the stroller to the flying field.

She thought, that someone could steal our baby - meanwhile I am watching up in the air.

And it's true - once you blink - you loose ....

I have to go back to work

Sounds just like my wife. Justin is now 8 but she will not let him out of sight, not even at our front yard. So, she companies us to every event that we go to.
